Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We recently launched our new company, Tiny Diamond Homes, in September of 2012. We have applied our 37 years of residential construction to develop a functional and safe tiny house. There are so many details to making a home that is safe on the road for the owner and others traveling on the road beside them.
What is your primary product or service?
We build tiny homes on trailers that meet the American Tiny Home Association guidelines for certification. All Tiny Diamond Homes are built on our patent pending trailer created specifically to meet our high standards for safe towing. These homes are on trailers from 20 feet long to 30 feet. Our homes have all the conveniences larger homes have but in a tiny affordable package.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Steve Coates is a local licensed and insured general contractor with over 37 years of experience of residential construction. He began his career in the early 1980's framing over 117, 3000 sq. ft. custom homes, in the Denver area, leading his small 3 man crew through a house every 11 working days. Since then he has lead 25 carpenters in completing multi-family complexes in Connecticut. Upon his family's return to Denver in 2000, Coates Woodworking, LLC, has completed over $3,000,000 in residential projects. Tiny Diamond Homes is one of the few tiny home companies lead by an experienced licensed general contractor.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Hire a company that has a huge portfolio of projects and references to call. These projects prepared us to solve the specific structural issues a tiny house on a trailer has. Tiny homes have to endure hundreds of hours of hurricane force winds and earthquake like shaking when being towed. Our homes meet every applicable International Residential Code and RV standards. Our tiny house trailers are the foundation of our homes and were built specifically to protect the home from the stresses of the road. We know and understand many of us cannot sleep in a loft and have main level sleeping options. We were the first to put fire escape windows in the sleeping loft, as well as a functional kitchen with all the details that makes cooking and cleaning easy. We were the first to put a deep sink with pull-out faucet, 3-burner propane stove and oven, cabinetry with drawers and other amenities, Corian countertops, full size shower, full size refrigerator and freezer. Our bathroom includes a washer/dryer with a functional layout that has had 9 people in it at one time.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Our long goal includes expansion, giving us the ability to hire veterans to help their transition back to civilian lifestyle easier. Once we grow enough, we will open a school to teach the necessary skills needed to build a tiny home.
